Group analytic psychotherapy is a form of personal therapy that takes place in a group setting. It is grounded in the understanding that much of our emotional and psychological challenges arise from our relationships and experiences within groups, such as family, work, and social circles.
Developed by psychiatrist S.H. Foulkes, this therapeutic approach provides a space where participants can explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in relation to others. Within a supportive and confidential group, individuals gain insight into the ways they relate to people, helping them recognise patterns established in their early years.
“We are lonesome animals. We spend all of our life trying to be less lonesome. One of the ancient methods is to tell a story, begging the listener to say and to feel, ‘Yes that is the way it is, or at least that is the way I feel it’. You’re not as alone as you thought”.
John Steinbeck
A typical group consists of 4-8 members who meet weekly for 90-minute sessions, guided by an experienced therapist. Group members are encouraged to commit for at least a year, as meaningful change often takes time. The therapy process involves individuals sharing their thoughts and feelings in the present moment, with no pressure to speak. This allows for deeper self-awareness and improved relationships, both within and outside the group.
The group environment offers a unique opportunity to hear and reflect on others’ experiences, helping individuals understand their own feelings and challenges from new perspectives.
Group analytic psychotherapy has been shown to benefit those experiencing depression, anxiety, interpersonal difficulties, and trauma. It fosters personal growth, improves self-esteem, and helps build healthier, more fulfilling connections with others.
